Technical, architectural and industrial heritage at the railway Šid - Dimitrovgrad
Abstract. The Serbian Šid-Dimitrovgrad railway
was completed in the late 19th century and is still in
use with occasional reconstructions and technological
upgrades; it is still in service. The geographical
position of the railway route and historical context at
the time of construction and during operation made the
railway exceed its local significance and become an
essential corridor of the European railway network. The
strategic modernisation of the Serbian railway system,
including the Šid - Dimitrovgrad railway, has been
underway in recent years. That is why we have initiated
the research of the industrial heritage along the
railway, which sometimes dates from the time of
construction. Our purpose was to identify, research and
document existing railway installations, technical
infrastructure, and the industrial heritage surrounding
the railway. In this article, we present the results of
our research and suggest ways to preserve some of the
valuable cultural, technical, and industrial heritage
continuously.

Prugom Orijent ekspresa kroz Srbiju
Apstrakt. Srpska železnica Šid – Dimitrovgrad završena je krajem XIX veka. I pored povremenih rekonstrukcija i tehnoloških dogradnji i dalje je u funkciji. Geografski položaj železničke trase i istorijski kontekst u vreme izgradnje i tokom eksploatacije učinili su da je pruga prevazišla lokalni značaj i postala važan koridor evropske železničke mreže. Poslednjih godina u toku je strateška modernizacija železničke mreže Srbije, uključujući i prugu Šid - Dimitrovgrad. Zato smo sproveli istraživanje preostalog industrijskog nasleđa duž pruge, koje ponekad datira iz vremena izgradnje. Naš cilj bio je da identifikujemo, istražimo i dokumentujemo postojeću arhitekturu železničkih stanica, železničku i tehničku infrastrukturu, kao i industrijsko nasleđe u okruženju pruge. U ovom članku predstavljamo rezultate našeg istraživanja i predlažemo načine za kontinuirano očuvanje vrednog kulturnog, tehničkog i industrijskog nasleđa.
